Match report On Sunday however Harold Wood played Hadleigh and Thundersley in the Premier Division of the Essex Sunday League. On a wet pitch with a soft outfield Wood were put into bat and looked to be struggling at 6 for 2 off 6 overs. But then an invaluable partnership of 85 between Sri Mangalapally (56) and Shaz Hafeez (56) meant that the Wood had a platform to score a very competitive total. Sri was run out and Hafeez was joined by Sunday captain Kevin Gibson who with 17 overs to go played the role of finisher for the Wood as he ended on a better than a run a ball 68 not out. He was helped down the order by a few big hits from Matt Sewell (15) and some excellent running from Peter Clarke (0*). Wood ended their 40 overs on 203 for 5, probably 50 runs more than they would have expected.
Hadleigh started their reply quite solidly but lost their first wicket with the score on 18 and then lost 2 more whilst in the thirties. This was mainly due to the fact of opening bowler Chris Hall (2-30) bowling a good line and length for the pitch. It was however the introduction of Satvinder Singh to the proceedings that was turning point for the game, he bowled somewhat erratically but just kept taking wickets, including that of the dangerous Dev Ghandi for just 11, Singh eventually ended with figures of 5-29 off six overs. Wood rather let the foot off the pedal near the end of the Hadleigh innings as the last 2 wickets put on 44, as Hadleigh crawled up to 128 all out, Sri taking the last 2 wickets soon after his introduction. Wood will be happy with this victory the first in the league since promotion last year.
