Harold Wood Cricket Club has proudly represented the local
community for over 130 years and continues to grow from strength to strength.
This season, we are proud to be fielding six Saturday league teams, alongside a
Saturday friendly team, reflecting the continued growth and success of the
club. As we are now fielding more teams than ever, it is only prudent that we
remind all club members how the selection process works.
Selection Process & Player Availability
& How Selection Works
Player availability is collected each week through either
the WhatsApp availability poll or the Microsoft Forms link.
The Selection Committee meets every Monday evening via
Microsoft Teams (or Tuesday if the Monday is a Bank Holiday) to select teams
for the coming weekend.
If a meeting cannot take place, team captains will discuss
selections with the Chairman of Selection via private messaging or a group chat
to ensure teams are selected on time.
During the selection meeting, each captain has the
opportunity to discuss the players they would like in their team for that week.
Once these discussions have concluded, the Chairman of Selection has the final
approval on all team selections. Selections are based on a range of factors
including player availability, current form, commitment, team balance,
opposition, player development and the wider needs of Harold Wood Cricket Club.
Please be aware that selection decisions are made with the
interests of Harold Wood Cricket Club as a whole in mind. This means that
decisions are not always based solely on the needs of an individual team.
Selection is reviewed each week and movement between teams is a normal part of
the process. A player's team one week should not be viewed as a permanent
indication of where they will play for the remainder of the season.
Team Announcements
Once selections have been finalised, the teams will be
published on the club website, usually by Wednesday afternoon.
Selected players will receive an email confirming their
selection. For players under the age of 18, this notification will be sent to
their parent or guardian.
Players are responsible for confirming that they confirm
your availability by following the link provided in the selection email.
As a Selection Committee, we aim to notify players of their
selection and allocated team as early as possible each week. We also recognise
the importance of communicating with players who have not been selected for a
fixture and will make every effort to inform them accordingly. However, due to
the time required to finalise multiple teams and the fact that selection
discussions can continue later into the week, this may not always be possible
before the teams are published.
Where a player has been selected for a different team from
the previous week, captains will also make every effort to speak with the
player before the teams are announced. Whilst we always aim to do this, there
may occasionally be insufficient time before teams are published.
Following confirmation, captains have a responsibility to
set up individual match WhatsApp groups. These will be created to allow
effective communication between captains and players in the lead-up to each
fixture. If a captain is not able to do this, the chairman on selection will do
this on their behalf.
Changes to Availability
If your availability changes after teams have been
announced, you must inform your captain for that fixture or the Chairman of
Selection as soon as possible.
Where necessary, players may be moved between teams or a
reserve player may be brought in to minimise disruption and avoid unnecessary
changes across multiple teams.
Queries Regarding Selection
The Selection Committee is committed to operating a fair,
transparent and consistent selection process in the best interests of Harold
Wood Cricket Club.
If you have any questions, concerns or would like
clarification regarding a selection decision, we respectfully ask that these
are directed to the Chairman of Selection in the first instance. This ensures
that any queries are dealt with consistently and that captains are not placed
in the position of having to justify decisions made by the Selection Committee
as a whole. Every selection decision is discussed collectively by the Selection
Committee, with the Chairman of Selection having final approval. While we
appreciate that not everyone will agree with every decision, we ask that all
discussions are approached respectfully.
We welcome constructive feedback and are always happy to
explain the reasoning behind selection decisions where appropriate. We simply ask
that all discussions are conducted respectfully, courteously and in the spirit
of supporting both the team and Harold Wood Cricket Club.
Selection decisions are made collectively by the Selection
Committee and approved by the Chairman of Selection. As such, any abuse,
personal criticism or inappropriate behaviour directed towards a captain for a
decision that has been made collectively will not be tolerated. Captains give
their time voluntarily for the benefit of the club and should be treated with
the respect they deserve.
Finally
We would like to remind all players that when selected, you
are representing Harold Wood Cricket Club, not a particular XI. There will be
occasions throughout the season where players are asked to move between teams
to support the wider needs of the club. This may be due to player availability,
league requirements, maintaining competitive balance, player development, or
ensuring every team is able to field a strong side.
One of the core principles of our Selection Committee is
that we do not like leaving players out. Wherever possible, we will strive to
ensure that everyone who makes themselves available has the opportunity to
play, whether that is in a Saturday league fixture, Saturday friendly or Sunday
match. This commitment has been demonstrated throughout the season, with the
club running seven teams on some weekends to maximise playing opportunities for
our members. While this is not always possible due to opposition availability
or player numbers, providing cricket for as many members as possible remains a
key priority.
We appreciate that this may occasionally mean playing in a
different team than expected. We ask all players to embrace this approach and
support the club's collective success.
Thank you for your continued support, flexibility and
commitment to Harold Wood Cricket Club. By working together and supporting the
selection process, we can continue to provide competitive cricket and enjoyable
opportunities for as many members as possible throughout the season. We
appreciate your understanding while the Selection Committee works to achieve
the best outcome for both individual players and the club as a whole.
Kind regards,
Chairman of Selection
Harold Wood Cricket Club
