Harold Wood Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket
Match report
Managed to put out a much stronger looking side on paper for this vital clash. Two of last years superstars (Craigo and Pete), were available, giving the side a much more balanced look. Having won the toss, skipper opted to have a bowl first. Craigo opened the bowling and was duly dispatched for 18 off the first over, the ball not giving any assistance to the bowler. We recovered well to finish off the innings by keeping the oppo down to 122. Raihan and Abdul both bowling well again. Some indifferent fielding probably cost us 10 runs, but overall we were happy with that score at the half way stage.
A new opening pair went out in the form of Raihan and Craigo. We were off to a good start, unfortunately Raihan was out caught when he looked well set and nearing the magical 25 mark. Skipper went in at 3, a few overs later Craigo retired with a mature and effortless 25. Pete came in at 4 and things were running along relatively smoothly. However, the skipper was playing out alot of dot balls by constantly finding the fielders. Slowly the run rate was climbing. Pete was run out by a brilliant direct hit and was shortly followed by the skipper, whose painful innings ended with a tame catch. Abdul and Chris both batted positively and with two overs to go we required 29 runs to win. However, what followed was some comical understanding of the scoreboard. Chris in the pursuit of 39 runs runs, was attempting to smash the boundaries and was run out in the process.
Re-enter Craig and the final equation boiled down to 15 off the last over. Craigo on strike, in the belief we needed 20 to win (check the scoreboard lads, lol), attempted to smash a boundary.. DOT ball. Again still thinking we need 20 to win, Craigo attempts another boundary and Abdul is run out in the process, ONE run.
Now needing 14 to win from 4 balls, a boundary was required. Craigo also finally realised we need 15 to win and not 20! 3rd ball is duly put away for a flat and very low 6. Equation is now 8 off 3. Craigo then brilliantly works the last 3 balls for 3's and we end up winners. Though not without drama. Excellent game, tightly contested to the end. Craigo batted superbly.
Lesson to be learnt, know what target you are chasing when batting second.
