Gidea Park and Romford v Harold Wood Cricket Club 1st XI - Saturday on Sun 25 Jun 2006 at 1.30
Harold Wood Cricket Club Won 26 runs
Match report
Harold Wood took on the might of Premier Division Gidea Park & Romford on Sunday in the replayed League Cup match. Wood once again elected to bat first and were soon off to a flyer, openers Sri Mangalapally (56) and Nadeem Sohail (24) put on 93 for the first wicket in just 13 overs, but as has happened so many times this year Wood lost 2 wickets without scoring a run, first Sohail trapped LBW by Russell Collard before Sri was well caught down the leg side by Chris Swainland off the bowling of Rudi Filmalter. Wood lost 2 more wickets and looked like they could be struggling at 122 for 4 at the half way point of their innings. However a crucial 88 run partnership between Dave Hollingsworth and Richard Brabner (31) meant that Wood were able to recover. Hollingsworth was lucky to survive early on after Collard dropped a simple catch at mid off. However, survive he did and when he was left by Brabner with the score on 210 he was joined firstly by Kevin Gibson (17) and then Shaz Hafeez (14) who scored quickly to take the score up to 267 for 7 off their 45 overs, Hollingsworth was not out for an invaluable 86.
Park were deducted an over from their innings for a slow over rate and knew that they would have to bat positively from the off. They lost the big wicket off Chris Swainland who was well caught by Hitesh Sharma at 3rd man off the bowling of Richard Bonner; Swainland seemed to crack under the pressure put on him from the Wood fielders. However he was replaced by Andy Churchill who with his captain Russell Collard down the other end were batting well until Churchill top edged a pull and was caught at mid wicket by Thomas Clarke for 35. Rudi Filmater was then bowled almost immediately for a duck by Kevin Gibson. Sibby Shah joined Collard and the 2 looked to have got the Park innings back on track before the big turning point of the game occurred. Collard was brilliantly run out by Gibson after a one hand pick up and throw at the stumps. Park at that stage needed 125 to win off the last 14 overs, and with some very useful batsmen to come they still had a chance of wining. But the lower order all got starts and then went, so that the run rate always stayed at about 10 an over. Firstly Jack Kliber (22) was caught by Hafeez off the bowling of Clarke, Shah (41) was trapped LBW by Richard Brabner and then Richard Bonner bowled Luke Baker (17) before conceding only 1 run off the 40th over a really crucial time to bowl such a tight over. By the time that Greg Churchill was caught and bowled by Brabner for 26 the game was almost over and the game ended with Sharma running out Patience. Park had been bowled out for 241, just 26 runs short of their target. Wood now face Shenfield in the quarter finals of the cup.
