Harold Wood Cricket Club Indoor (Met.) A Team v Frenford on Sat 24 Nov 2012 at 11am
Harold Wood Cricket Club Lost by 14 runs

Match report Harold Wood took on Frenford what has been described as, “a match between two average cricket teams in a sports hall in East London”.

The game began with Harold Wood once again bemoaning what a useless tosser Shahzad Hafeez is, consequently the Wood did not get to take advantage of putting pads on first to warm up in the sub zero sports hall.

Perhaps the cold weather could be used to explain the fielding of Harold Wood in the first innings. However, this would be unfair on the weather as the Wood were simply shocking. Fresh from last weeks ‘South African style’ performance in the field, the Wood put up a performance that could only be described as very ‘Indian’. Bambi on ice would have had more co-ordination than the Wood’s offering on this particular Saturday morning.

Frenford showed their expertise in working the angles of the hall in scoring 141 for 2 off of the first 11 overs. Countless well executed late cuts and dabs to the leg side were played and Frenford looked like posting an insurmountable total.

Mr Hafeez decided in all his wisdom to leave the last over of the innings to the self-proclaimed saviour of Harold Wood. As Floppy took the ball groans were heard from the spectators as they expected to be taking frequent evasive cover.

This, however, turned out to be a masterstroke. With 3 fielders on the boundary Frenford decided that the bowling from the Harold Wood ‘specialist death bowler’ only merited boundaries as opposed to the easy three runs on offer each ball. Three leg byes, two wickets and a run out later Frenford returned to the changing area with their tails between their legs whilst Floppy walked off with a double wicket maiden to his name in the last over of the innings. Malinga would have been proud.

Harold Wood set off in pursuit of 145 in bizarre fashion. Pete Clarke managing to nick the only ball that swung all day through to the keeper, out off the first ball of the innings. Harold Wood’s Inzamam look -a -like Shahzad Hafeez walked out to the crease to join Chris as Abdul had failed to manage to put his pads on in time. If there was a time for a big man to stand up and be counted, this was it, and Shahzad is a very big man.

A decent partnership ensued and the Wood began to tick along nicely. Shahzad was out for 19, Chris retiring on 25. Abdul came and retired soon after with another classy 25 for the Wood. Floppy kept the scoring ticking along until walking across his stumps one too many times and Haroon continued his good form with the bat.

Chris joined Haroon at the crease once Abdul retired; he hit a few more runs before driving upishly and getting well caught at cover. Consequently Abdul returned very quickly to the firing line. Abdul and Haroon scored quickly and with two overs to spare Harold Wood required 25. Unfortunately two good run outs from Frenford meant that Harold Wood ended 14 short of chasing a very big score.

Frenford partied as though they had just won the World Cup and Harold Wood were gutted having done so well to almost chase an impressive score. Had Harold Wood been awake/warm for the first eleven overs of the match then the result might have been different. However, there are too many “ifs” and “buts”. Harold Wood will look to bounce back in two weeks time against Chingford.
