Match report Harold Wood played out a highly competitive draw against Southend on Saturday. Having won the toss and batted first in the sweltering heat Wood lost Rahill Mirza for a duck, but fellow opener Satvinder Singh played well to record a half century. Unfortunately Wood’s middle order seemed to be letting the heat get to them as firstly Dave Hollingsworth (25), Sri Mangalapally (5) and Nadeem Sohail (7) fell within quick succession, and when Singh fell for 51 Wood were on the brink at 114 for 5. However Southend then found Harold Wood Captain Shaz Hafeez and vice captain Kevin Gibson at the wicket and together they put on an invaluable 108 run partnership for the 6th wicket Gibson being the more aggressive of the two. Hafeez was finally out for 32 and Gibson was also eventually out for exactly 100 with the score on 254, and a few balls later they declared on 257 for 7 off 52 overs.
In reply Southend started very steadily putting on 51 for the first wicket before a run out split the openers. Then it was Richard Bonner to show why he has been performing so well in the second team for most of the season. He took two wickets but 70 runs apart from each other and this was after bowling 15 overs straight in the still very hot and humid conditions. Southend continued to not lose wickets but also were not going along at a quick enough run rate. The 20 or so minutes they had taken to bowl their overs longer than usual really cost them as overs began to run low. The introduction of Sri Mangalapally to bowl his off spin meant a run rate of about a run a ball was occurring but also the wickets also fell, he ended up with figures of 2-60 as the Southend run chase ran out of steam as they finished on 229 for 5 just 28 runs short of their target.
