Match report
Harold Wood were left to rue the weather after pilling up a huge total against Gidea Park in the second round of the League Cup. Third division Wood really announced themselves to the rest of the Shepherd Neame League by scoring 313 for 4 off their 45 overs against Premier Division Park. It was the Indian overseas player Sri Mangalapally who was the hero of the innings as he scored 132, and this was after going out to bat at number 3 with 102 already on the board. Openers Nadeem Sohail (66) and Rahill Mirza (48) had seen the shine of the ball, and then some, to get the wood off to a flyer with first hundred coming in 16 overs. But with the introduction of Sri to the crease the Wood bat continued to dominate the Gidea Park ball. When Sohail and then Dave Hollingsworth fell within a close proximity of each other Sri was joined at the crease by Captain Shaz Hafeez, they were on 178 for 3 and had 14 overs remaining. But then the real onslaught occurred, not only through boundaries but also through intelligent running between the two, making sure that not a ball was bowled without at least a single coming from it. The two were finally separated with just a single ball left of the 45 overs and had moved the score up to 313 for 4, Hafeez ending on 30 not out. Andy Churchill was the pick of the Gidea park bowlers taking 2-41 from his 9 overs, whilst in contrast Park skipper Russell Collard went for 62 off his 5 overs. However that was it for the match as the heavens opened and the rain did not stop for the rest of the day. The rematch between the two sides will be eagerly anticipated, Gidea Park now having seen what they are up against may not be caught as cold as they were on Saturday.
