Match report Harold Wood’s competitive season got under way on Saturday in the first round of the league cup. Last years semi-finalists visited Walthamstow hoping that they could reach the second round of the cup for the third year in a row. Walthamstow won the toss and on a bowler friendly pitch decided to field first. Wood moved to 63 for 1 off of 17 overs with Rahill Mirza (16) and new overseas player Sri Managalapally putting on 56 for the second wicket before Sri went for 41. Wickets then began to fall at a regular pace and a 34 run partnership for the 8th wicket between captain Shaz Hafeez (20) and Peter Clarke (14) meant that the wood were able to post a small total of 136 all out off 44.1 overs. Although disappointed with the low total Wood were soon feeling more positive as Richard Brabner struck early with the new ball and he finished with 3-22 as Walthamstow fell to 19 for 3. A partnership of 29 for the 4th wicket was broken by Chris Hall (2-20) as the Wood started to take control, and the introduction of the mystery spin of James Smith really meant that Walthamstow were batting themselves out of the match. Smith finished with figures of 9 5 5 2 as Walthamstow were eventually all out for 85, 51 runs short of the total set by the Wood. The second round of the cup continues this Saturday with the Wood taking on Gidea Park at Gallows Corner.
